Soweto50 is dedicated to honoring the rich history, resilience, and cultural heritage that have shaped generations. Our mission is to preserve important stories, celebrate achievements, and inspire future generations through education, events, and community engagement.
Over the years, the spirit of Soweto has become a symbol of unity, courage, and positive change. The journey reflects the determination of individuals and communities who worked together to create opportunities, overcome challenges, and build a brighter future.
In the 50 years since that defining act of youth resistance that reshaped global consciousness, Harlem’s historic New Heritage theater and its long-time arts and culture leader, Voza Rivers, has created a direct artistic lineage from those young people of Soweto through the creative genius of the late, Mbongeni Ngema to Harlem and then Lincoln Center to Broadway. That creative impulse runs through the multiple companies of The Lion King running continuously around the world to this very day. This creative journey proves, once again, that amazing things can begin when people find the strength and courage to realize their dreams despite all obstacles and setbacks. Soweto 50 is a manifestation of that courage, vision and drive to make things manifest even when the path is hard.
The Soweto50 initiative, a special project by the New Heritage Theatre Group, was created to commemorate significant milestones and recognize the people whose contributions have left a lasting impact. Through storytelling, educational programs, cultural celebrations, and community events, we aim to keep this important history alive and accessible to everyone.
As we continue to grow, we remain committed to fostering intergenerational connections while celebrating the values of leadership, resilience, creativity, and community empowerment.
The Storyteller in Harlem began with an extraordinary conversation with Mr. Voza Rivers, a true icon whose passion for the arts has illuminated stages and touched hearts for over six decades. That conversation became the first book in the series, The Storyteller in Harlem: Meet Voza Rivers, a unique opportunity to learn from Voza as he shared not just stories but the very soul of Harlem, a place he calls home with immense pride and deep reverence. From that foundation the series continues with its second book, The Storyteller in Harlem Presents: From Soweto, S.A. to Harlem, USA, carrying the same spirit of cultural memory across continents and generations. On Sale June 16, 2026 available BookShop.com, Amazon.com and Barnes and Nobles.~ S. Michele Echols
